Have you ever wondered why animals make their homes among high-rise buildings and honking cars? Discover how animals adapt and thrive alongside humans in the new exhibition based on Sarah Sheppard’s book Djuren i staden.
Welcome to the urban jungle
Step inside the book and meet gossiping sparrows, night-patrolling foxes, tram-riding pigeons, and even the city’s craftiest resident – the rat! It’s a world where proportions are all out of scale, with banana slides and giant chips. Through facts, imagination and humour you can explore how animals live in the city – and discover why it has become home to blackbirds, squirrels, wild boar and even some more unusual guests.
Whether you’re young or old, you’ll enjoy an experience where knowledge meets fantasy and Sarah Sheppard’s illustrations come to life. Learn more about the coolest city dwellers and why they have chosen to live right alongside us humans in this exhibition for the whole family.
Animals in the medieval town
In the Middle Ages, people and animals coexisted side by side. Pigs, goats, hens and sheep roamed freely through the streets. Dogs, cats, and horses were constant companions in the cityscape.
In the medieval part of the exhibition, you can step into an old town setting: try selling sausages at the food stall, warm up by the hearth, feed pigs in the street, or settle into the home of a Lödöse household. You can even tackle the city’s rubbish heap and search for treasures – just as archaeologists do today. Bricks, bones, leather scraps and old shoes all tell stories about life in the town more than 800 years ago.
Did you know that animals back then looked quite different from those we see today – often smaller in size. Even though pigs were smaller, they had large tusks that could make them truly dangerous. Nothing was wasted: horns became combs, skins became shoes, bones became ice skates, and meat was food on the table. Animals were both dangerous and vital – an indispensable part of urban life.
