Lödöse Museum has been conducting archaeological contract work since the 1960s and has extensive experience in all types of archaeological assignments. In 2022, a new initiative was launched where contract archaeology within the Västra Götaland region moved back to Lödöse Museum from the sister unit, Kulturmiljö.

With a focus on West Swedish archaeology, the museum conducts archaeological preliminary studies, inventories, investigations, preliminary investigations, and excavations throughout the Västra Götaland region. The museum's archaeologists have expertise in areas such as urban archaeology, osteology, and digital documentation technology. The museum also has educators who work to communicate and engage the public in the archaeological investigations and results.

The archaeologists work closely with antiquarians in collection management, building conservation, and landscape conservation to offer comprehensive and detailed assessments in archaeology and cultural environment issues.

In addition to contract archaeology, the museum runs its own research projects, often focusing on the Middle Ages in West Sweden. Projects in recent years have focused on medieval churches in Dalsland, castles in Västra Götaland, and the harbor area in the medieval town of Lödöse.

For questions, please contact one of the archaeologists at the museum, or send an email to our functional mailbox: kultur.arkeologi@vgregion.se.
