The Archaeological History of Lödöse

Bang! The archaeological history of Lödöse commenced with a bang at the beginning of the 1900s. And as if that were not enough, parts of skeletons were thrown into the air, frightening the life out of a group of railway workers who were in the process of blasting a rocky outcrop. This marked the start of archaeological excavations in Lödöse.

Research and Projects

At Lödöse Museum, we embark on captivating projects that delve into the medieval history of Västra Götaland. Our initiatives aim to deepen the understanding of medieval Lödöse and its unique collections.

Contract Archaeology

Lödöse Museum has been conducting archaeological contract work since the 1960s and has extensive experience in all types of archaeological assignments. In 2022, a new initiative was launched where contract archaeology within the Västra Götaland region moved back to Lödöse Museum from the sister unit, Kulturmiljö.
